Depression is more than just feeling sad or upset. It’s a serious mental disorder that comes with harmful symptoms like a deep despair, loss of interest in one’s day to day, and general discontent or unhappiness. Here is a more complete list of common depression symptoms:

The depression that you and I are most familiar with is major depression, which is characterized by the above symptoms. To be diagnosed with major depression, one must exhibit at least 5 depression symptoms for two weeks or longer. However, there are other types of depression, too.

Other types of depression include minor depression, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and persistent depressive disorder (PDD). While these share the depression symptoms listed above, there are other factors that distinguish them from one another such as their duration and/or cause.

Minor depression: This type of depression differs from major depression in that only two depression symptoms must be present for the individual to be diagnosed.

Bipolar disorder: Bipolar disorder is different from other types of depression in that it comes with two main states: depression but also mania. Mania is the opposite of depression, in that the individual experiences an elevated or excitable mood.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): SAD, sometimes called winter depression, is a form of depression that typically begins in the colder months and resolves in the warmer months.

Persistent depressive disorder (PDD): PDD is long-term. It is characterized by the symptoms listed above, but those with PDD exhibit depression symptoms for at least two years.
